Symptoms of Male Infertility and Treatments
Article by Dr Easton Patrick
Numerous cases of failure after attempting pregnancy all over the world, is due to the infertile male partner. Normally pregnancy comes within a year of unprotected sex, but still if the female fails to conceive, the couple must see a doctor. The sperm or sperms released when a male ejaculates, fertilize egg to make a female pregnant. Normally 400 million sperms are contained in the semen that a male ejaculates. 15-20 million sperms are healthy enough to support fertilization. However only 400 survive after ejaculation is over and 40 among 400 manage to swim closer to the egg withstanding the toxicity of the semen and hostile vaginal environment.
All the effort of sperms however ends with an explosive procedure called capacitation when one single sperm drills a hole in the tough outer layer of egg, and reaches the inner part, fertilizing the egg and allowing the woman to conceive. Genetics, poor sperm count, slow sperm movement and abnormal shape and length of sperms, diseases like thyroid, diabetes etc, excessive smoking and alcohol intake, testosterone deficiency, semen problems, testicular shrinkage due to intake of steroids, testicular trauma, undescended testes, excessive stress, toxic environments and males being exposed to radiation, staying away from sex for a long period of time, untreated sexually transmitted diseases and infections, variococeles or varicose veins in the testicles, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, fevers, spinal cord lesions, obesity and certain antibiotics are some of the common causes of male infertility.
Symptoms of Male Infertility
1. Inability to make the female partner pregnant within 6 months of unprotected sex.2. Apathy towards sex3. Enlarged breast tissues in males4. Wrinkled male organ5. Failure to ejaculate6. Inability to achieve erection7. Dull skin in infertile males.
Treatment for Male Infertility
1. Doctor may prescribe certain medicines like mesterolone, tamoxifen, clomiphene citrate to improve the seminal quality of the infertile male. Even gonadotropin injections may be suggested for the same purpose.
2. One may also opt for surgical treatment. Microsurgery is a way to treat male infertility due to hindrances in the sperm conduction pathway, varicoceles, undescended testes etc.
3. When drugs and surgery fail to help an infertile male, he may take recourse to assisted reproduction carried out in reproductive laboratories. The target is to improve semen qualitatively and facilitate the penetration of sperm in to egg or ovum. In laboratory, this target is achieved through procedures like sperm washing, capacitation, intra-uterine insemination (IUI), gamete intra-fallopian transfer (GIFT), in vitro fertilization (IVF) and micro-manipulation (ICSI).
4. Alternative treatment includes use of herbs to cure infertility in males. Herbs like Asian ginseng, Siberian ginseng, astragalus and pumpkin seeds help in curing infertility by boosting sperm production, increasing sperm motility and also sex drive in males.
